Thank you for your comment Sue. With your experience and credibility, I’d think that you could convince the school to launch a project or program like the one you speak of, have you considered bringing it up? In writing this I found so many educators who have a real desire to instill programs like these in schools…if you ever need a research buddy for a project like this, please let me know!

Bert Dumars posted a link today to an article about tweeting students. Here’s that link: “How Twitter in the Classroom is Boosting Student Engagement http://bit.ly/aLyIrB I appreciate you taking the time to stop in today!

I had a mtg today regarding communications for my son's middle school. I keep thinking it would be fun to have the kids producing videos, posts, tweeting and managing the schools FB page - with guidance of course. I think it would be very interesting to see what they want to share with the world and how they share it, as well as be good insight for me as a parent.

Great points Taryn! I rest a little easier knowing that there are people out there like danah who have dedicated years towards the education and awareness on this topic. I posted all of the links because these are far better leaders and thinkers on this topic than I am! I wrote today because I think that we all have a role in this. It excites me to be able to add my efforts when and where I can fit them in, and I hope that others feel the same way. Thank you for commenting today!

Excellent post as always, James. One thing that you didn't mention is the dark side of hyperconnectivity and the importance that teens realize the permanence of what they post online. Social networking sites are also a great tool for parents to communicate with kids in a non-threatening medium and build relationships in ways not possible during the angsty/rebellious years. Food for thought. :)
